Presidential election in Finland 2018

In Finland the President of the Republic is elected by a direct vote for a term of six years. If necessary, the presidential election may consist of two rounds. First election day is Sunday 28 January 2018. The Department for Communications of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs is here to help the international media and other observers to cover the elections.

Accreditation is necessary for all foreign media representatives wishing to cover the Finnish Presidential Election 2018 and to take part in the Election Night for media, press conferences and other media events.

This accreditation covers also possible second round of the election, February 11, 2018.

Media Programme for first round, January 28, 2018

Event: Election Night
Date: Sunday 28 January 2018
Time: From 17 to midnight
Venue: House of the Estates, Snellmanninkatu 9–11, Helsinki

Media facilities, located in the House of Estates (in Finnish: Säätytalo) in Helsinki City Centre, are open for accredited media from 5 PM up till midnight.

The Press Room at the House of Estates will offer simultaneous interpretation into English of the televised Election night programme broadcast by Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. In addition, there will be printers and a wireless internet connection (WLAN) available. Possibilities to use a fixed-line broadband connection in the House of Estates are limited.

  • The Presidential Candidates will enter the House of Estates approx. at 8.20 pm. They will give short comments to the media during their entrance.
  • After the entrance the Candidates will have fixed meetings with Finnish media, There will be brief opportunities for  International media representatives to meet the Candidates.
  • The unofficial results of the Election will be ready approx. at 10 pm . After that there will be a press conference by the (still unofficial) Winner or the two Candidates proceeding to the final round to be held on Feb 11, 2018. Simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided.

Media representatives accredited to the Election will have an opportunity to visit the House of Estates already on Friday, January 26. Details will be provided later to the accredited media representatives.

Please note that you are requested to present your ID Card (passport or other travel document for EU Nationals) at the entrance of the House of Estates.

Date: Monday 29 January 2018
Time: From 11.00 to 12.30
Venue: Communications Department of the MFA, Kanavakatu 3 C, Helsinki

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will organise a post-election analysis and discussion event led by senior political journalist, Mr. Marko Junkkari, representing Helsingin Sanomat, the biggest Newspaper in Finland.
