Because of the major economic importance of Taiwan, it is natural for Finland to promote bilateral economic and trade relations as well as cooperation related to technology, research and culture with Taiwan. Representation and contacts between the public authorities are managed through trade offices. In accordance with its One China Policy, Finland does not recognize Taiwan (The Republic of China) as an independent state or maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
In 2014, Finpro, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation Tekes, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs piloted a new type of Team Finland cooperation in their East Asia monitoring, drawing on shared specialist resources. Finland’s Trade and Innovation Office in Taipei City is responsible for Finnish actors' interests in Taiwan.
The office in Taipei City offers guidance in passport and visa matters. The nearest authority granting these documents is the Consulate General of Finland in Hong Kong.
