Finland's development cooperation with Nicaragua
The traditional bilateral development cooperation projects with Nicaragua will in practice end when the ongoing project agreements expire by the end of 2012.
However, the 30 years of cooperation between Finland and Nicaragua will not be over. In the future, cooperation with Nicaragua will focus on civil society activities.
The wide and diverse relations between the two countries have to a large extent developed on the foundation built by the long-term development cooperation. Close cooperation is carried out also in many multilateral organisations, such as the United Nations.
In its bilateral projects in Nicaragua, Finland has concentrated on reducing rural poverty, strengthening good governance, and developing health care services. Cooperation in the rural sector has been particularly fruitful.
In 2011, Finland supported Nicaragua by10.5 million euros. In addition to this, Finland´s support to NGOs’ amounted to about half a million euros.
