Press release 80/2007
9 May, 2007
Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay Jorge Lepra and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy Mario Bergara, accompanied by a large business delegation, will visit Finland on 13‑17 May at the invitation of Minister of Trade and Industry Mauri Pekkarinen. The key topics of discussion during Minister Lepra's visit will include the economic and trade relations and investments between Finland and Uruguay, as well as energy issues. The visit will also include an introduction to the Finnish research and innovation policy and the activities of the Parliamentary Committee for the Future. The guests will attend a business seminar organised by Finpro to present business opportunities the Uruguayan economy has to offer. The programme of the delegation will also include meetings and discussions with representatives of Finnish business life and financing institutions.
Minister Paula Lehtomäki visited Uruguay last year in her capacity as the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development. During her visit, Uruguay established a Uruguayan-Finnish Chamber of Commerce, which is a sign of the growing interest of Uruguayans towards Finland and Finnish markets. Traditionally, the bilateral trade between Finland and Uruguay has been quite limited. At the moment, Botnia is implementing in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, a pulp mill project that is the biggest Finnish investment ever made in a foreign country, and also the biggest investment in Uruguay's history. The mill is scheduled to enter production in autumn 2007.
