EU Statement on ODIHR Limited Election Observation Mission to Latvia

The EU has taken note of the statement of the Russian Federation.

The ODIHR sent a Needs Assessment Mission to Latvia 3 – 5 August 2006. Based on the assessment ODIHR recommended undertaking a Limited Election Observation Mission to the forthcoming Saeima elections. In our view it is for the ODIHR to decide the scope of its election observation missions.

We look forward to the report of the Limited Election Observation Mission.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia, EFTA country  Liechtenstein, member of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this statement.

* Croatia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
