New Ambassador to Beijing and Deputy Director General to Department for Communications
The President of the Republic has appointed Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Jarno Syrjälä as Head of Finland’s Mission in Beijing. The Government has appointed Counsellor Johanna Kotkajärvi to serve for a four-year period as the Deputy Director General of the Department for Communications. Both Syrjälä and Kotkajärvi will start in their new duties on 1 September 2017.
Jarno Syrjälä will transfer to his position as Finland’s Ambassador to China from the duties of the Director General of the Department for Africa and the Middle East.
Earlier, he has served as Finland’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and in the embassies of, for example, Berlin, Washington, Ramallah and Tel Aviv.
In the Foreign Ministry, Syrjälä has worked, for example, as Head of the Political Department.
Jarno Syrjälä joined the Foreign Ministry in 1990. He holds the degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration.
Johanna Kotkajärvi will transfer to her position as the Deputy Director General of the Department for Communications from the duties of the Head of the Unit for Communications on Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Earlier, Kotkajärvi has served, for example, in the Department for Africa and Asia, Political Department, Global Department and the Secretariat for EU Affairs.
She was also the general secretary of the 2009 Security and Defence Policy Report project. She has experience of the Diplomatic Service from Tokyo, Oslo, Zagreb and Luxembourg.
Kotkajärvi joined the Foreign Ministry for the first time in 1993 as a trainee in the newly established Europe Information. She has held a position in the ministry since 1994, first as an EU trainee followed by various fixed-term positions. She completed the Diplomatic Training Course in 1997. She holds the degree of Master of Social Sciences.
