Clean drinking water improves the quality of life of the communities of Sapahaquí and Patacamaya - Water is life II.

Description

The project will be complemented with Caritas Switzerland in the Municipality of Sapahaquí and Patacamaya where remote rural communities suffer from extreme poverty and serious lack of clean drinking water. 52.5% of the population lack clean water and have no proper sanitary conditions or knowledge of good sanitary practices which is why the general state of health of the population, especially children, is poor. There is no general information about the practices of personal hygiene (such as handwashing), clean facilities, garbage disposal, environmental protection or water disinfection practices. Consumption of contaminated water is common resulting in high prevalence of acute diarrheal diseases, parasites and other illnesses particularly in children and elderly. The main beneficiaries of the project are the 153 families (approximately 682 people) of the communities of Vituyo, Ocuire and Aguallamaya, that are indigenous Aymara speaking communities. The objective of this Project is to secure access to clean water (one of the basic human needs), improve general developmental conditions, and specifically the health conditions by constructing water supply systems that provide safe drinking water in sufficient quality and quantity and by spreading knowledge of adequate hygienic practices through workshops and by training school children, the community in general, and the communal health promoters so that they would take the responsibility of their own sanitary conditions. In addition, a toilet will be constructed in each household. The project aims at strengthening also the administrative capacities of the communities by participating them in all phases of the project from planning and implementation through evaluation, and by providing them training in how to organize the community, the water system maintenance and the Water Committees. Special attention is given to the participation of women to strengthen their position and possibilities for decision. Women are also encouraged to organize themselves and the whole community is offered workshops on gender equality. The environmental aspect is mainstreamed in all project activities.
