Forestry sector ICI-project

Description

Forests have provided a critically important source of employment and income in Myanmar. However, in recent years deforestation in Myanmar has been very rapid and the rate of deforestation is currently one of highest in the world. The Myanmar Government has recognised this as a key environmental challenge, and has initiated or joined several programmes and processes to address it. However, it is recognised that none of these initiatives aiming to promote sustainable forest governance can be implemented successfully without up-to-date information of forests resources and land uses. Reliable and cost-efficient forest monitoring system – based on a thorough and systematic national forest inventory - is a key element for providing up-to-date information and supporting sustainable forest management. The objective of the institutional cooperation between Finland’s Natural Resources Institute (Luke), the Forest Department of Myanmar’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC), and the University of Forestry, Yezin, is to ensure the sustainability of the National Forest Inventory (NFI) and National Forest Monitoring Information System (NFMIS) that will be developed for Myanmar with the support of FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations) and Finland. The project will complement the FAO-supported programme by means of building capacity of the partner organisations to upgrade skills, foster new experts and develop methodologies for future forest inventory and monitoring efforts. The main direct beneficiaries of the project are: MONREC’s Forest Department , the Forest Research Institute of MONREC and the University of Forestry, Yezin. The budget of the 4-year project is 1 000 000 Euro.
