Minister Mykkänen to a meeting of EU Trade Ministers
Press release 213/2016
Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Kai Mykkänen will participate in a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC Trade) in Brussels on 11 October.
The meeting will discuss the modernisation of the EU’s trade defence instruments. The European Council discussed the matter already in October and empowered the ministers of trade to continue the negotiations with a view to finding a suitable solution. Minister Mykkänen says that the interests of all parties involved should be taken into account equally in the negotiations.
The Council will discuss developments in the negotiations on a trade and investment agreement with the United States (TTIP). The ministers of trade are expected to confirm their support for the negotiations. In Minister Mykkänen’s estimate, the negotiations have made good progress although they will not be completed by the end of the year as was planned.
“It is important to build on the progress we have achieved so far when we start our negotiations with the new United States administration,” Mykkänen says.
The Council will also discuss the prospects of the World Trade Organisation’s Doha Round talks (DDA, Doha Development Agenda). The next WTO Ministerial Conference will be held in Buenos Aires in December 2017. The Council will also discuss developments in the negotiations on agreements seeking to open up trade in services and environmental goods. The aim is to conclude both negotiations by the end of the year.
Lastly, the Commission will inform the Council of the state of play in negotiations on free trade agreements with Japan and Mercosur.
