Plan Finland, Project for income generation through community honey value chain management in Inhambane – PROMEL

The project contributes to poverty reduction through income generation and the creation of employment opportunities with special focus on youth and young women in five districts of Inhambane province in Mozambique. The aim is to improve the quality of honey production and supply and increase access to markets, targeting youth and especially young women as drivers of change. The target groups are 459 beekeeper’s households, 100 youth taking part in the beekeeping courses, 100 members of cooperative and policy makers. The final beneficiaries are around 10 000 rural inhabitants in Inhambane. At the end of the project beekeepers (at least 30 % are women) have improved skills to produce and process honey and the production of certified honey has increased up to 30 000 liters per year, and the income of the participating households has increased by 100 %. A cooperative of the beekeepers has been set up to improve honey processing and marketing and to provide access to financial services and markets.
