New Heads of Embassies to Bangkok, Pretoria and St. Petersburg
At the presidential session on Friday 8 March, the President of the Republic appointed the following new Heads of Embassies. They will assume their functions on 1 September 2016.
Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Satu Suikkari-Kleven was appointed to serve as Head of the Finnish Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Currently Ms Suikkari-Kleven serves as Director of the Unit for Public International Law at the Legal Service of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
She has previously worked for example for the Political Department as Head of Team for UN Security Council and at the Unit for Human Rights Policy. Her career in the diplomatic service has taken her to the Finnish Embassy in Oslo and the Permanent Mission of Finland to the UN in New York.
Furthermore, Ms Suikkari-Kleven has held positions for example at the Office of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights in Strasbourg and at the headquarters of UN Refugee Agency UNHCR in Geneve and its office in Afghanistan.
Ms Suikkari-Kleven entered the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1998.
Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Kari Alanko was appointed to serve as Head of the Finnish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.
Mr Alanko will move to Pretoria from the Ministry's Department for Africa and the Middle East, where he serves as Deputy Director-General.
Previously he has served for example as Finland's Ambassador in Maputo and Hanoi and as Director of the Unit for Southern Africa at the Ministry.
Mr Alanko joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1985.
Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Marja Liivala was appointed to serve as Head of the Finnish Consulate General in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Ms Liivala serves currently as Director of the Unit for Russia at the Ministry's Department for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
She has previosly held several different positions at the Department for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia and served as Minister Counsellor at the Finnish Embassy in Moscow.
Ms Liivala joined the Ministry in 1997.
