New Ambassadors to Canberra and Sofia
At the presidential session on Friday 18 March, the President of the Republic decided to appoint the following new Ambassadors. They will assume their functions on 1 September 2016.
Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Lars Backström was appointed to serve as Head of the Embassy of Finland in Canberra, Australia.
Backström will transfer to Australia from the position of Special Representative for Mediation. He has previously served as Finland's Ambassador in China and Thailand.
Backström joined the Foreign Ministry in 1982. Before that he worked as a radio journalist at the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE.
Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Päivi Blinnikka was appointed to serve as Head of the Embassy of Finland in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Blinnikka is currently Director of the Ministry's Passport and Visa Unit.
Previously she has served, among other things, as Consul General at the Consulate General of Finland in Hamburg.
Blinnikka joined the Foreign Ministry in 1981.
