The Northern Dimension for the policies of the European Union was first discussed when Finland, Sweden and Norway were preparing for the referendums concerning their accession to the European Union. The concepts ‘Nordic’ and ‘Northern Dimension’ were used side by side and they referred to questions that the future EU member states, Finland and Sweden, wanted to draw attention to in the EU, highlighting their Nordic values, developed economies and geographical position.
