Finland supports victims of the conflicts in Yemen and Libya

Press Release 106/2015
16 April 2015

Finland granted EUR 900,000 on 17 April in humanitarian aid to the victims of the conflicts in Libya and Yemen. The support will be channelled to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) through the Finnish Red Cross; EUR 400,000 of the support will be directed to Libya and EUR 500,000 to Yemen. The support will be granted from Finland's development cooperation appropriations earmarked for humanitarian aid purposes.

The escalation of fighting has made the humanitarian situation in Yemen critical. The number of internally displaced persons and refugees fleeing to Somalia and Djibouti has increased because of the developments. Yemen's humanitarian needs were huge already before: about 16 million people have been in need of humanitarian aid. The ICRC has urged the parties to the conflict observe the obligations of humanitarian law. It offers first aid, material assistance such as household equipment and sanitation, food aid, and access to clean water. In addition, the organisation visits prisons and supports the improvement of prisoners' living conditions and works to help trace missing family members.

In Libya, the humanitarian situation is critical and the security situation has deteriorated rapidly because of upsurge of fighting. It is extremely difficult to reach those in need of help. The ICRC is one of the few humanitarian organisations that is capable of action in the country together with the Libyan Red Crescent. The organisation tries to help hospitals maintain their services, requires observance of humanitarian law and ensures protection of civilians, medical aid and aid activities. Work is also done to unite missing family members.

The Finnish Red Cross supports the ICRC's operations through material supplies and possible technical aid.
