UK Foreign Secretary Hammond to visit Finland
Press Release 1/2015
5 January 2015
The British Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon Philip Hammond, will visit Finland on Thursday 8 January 2015. Foreign Secretary Hammond will meet with Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja and Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori. The visit to Helsinki is a part of his tour of the EU countries' capitals. His next stop after Finland will be Lithuania.
The meetings will focus on the EU. The Foreign Secretary's main intention during the visit is to explain to Finland Britain's objectives and views concerning the EU as a part of Prime Minister David Cameron's Cabinet's efforts to clarify the UK's relationship with the EU. The matter should be viewed against the background of Minister Cameron's pledge that a referendum on EU membership will be held if his Conservative Party wins the general election of May 2015.
Other topics of discussion will include questions related to Russia and Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
Rt Hon Philip Hammond was appointed Foreign Secretary in the summer of 2014. Before that, he served as Secretary of State for Defence.
