Foreign Minister of Laos visits Finland

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith of Laos is visiting Finland on 1 to 3 October. During his visit, Minister Sisoulith meets with Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja and Development Minister Sirpa Paatero. The ministers will discuss the development of relations between Finland and Laos as well as regional issues.
Minister Sisoulith is also visiting Parliament and meets with Speaker Eero Heinäluoma and learns about Finland’s parliamentary system. In addition, the delegation is becoming acquainted with Finnish expertise in environmental, water and climate issues.
Relations between Finland and Laos are good and mostly based on development cooperation; commercial and economic relations are gradually being developed. Finland supports Laos bilaterally in the forestry and environmental sectors as well as through a mapping project. In addition, Laos is involved in all of the regional projects supported by Finland.
Laos is one of the world’s poorest countries. The country will most likely reach the goal of halving poverty by 2015. Laos has the ambitious goal of rising from among the least developed countries (LDCs) by the year 2020.
