Climate Modelling and Observations in India; Institutional Cooperation Instrument (ICI) Finnish Meteorological Institute

The purpose of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) in this ICI-project is to improve the capacity of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) by training the management and the key personnel of IMD. By producing more accurate climate change scenarios, forecasts and -modeling, IMD is able to develop tailored climate change estimations for various sectors of the Indian society that would give bases to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate. The project aims to support future policy actions regarding air quality and climate change in India. Air quality in the second populous country in the world, India, is poor. It has a lot of negative impacts on health, and part of them are fatal. The climate change causes human and economic losses. Problems with air quality and insufficient water resources will be more common, if there will be no action taken. By improved capacity, there will be more accurate quality information available. Dangerous weather phenomena, floods and drought, but also bad air quality usually hit hardest the poorest people. Their habitations are frail and they do not have resources or means to defend themselves against environmental threats. By improving the predictability of the future climate, this project indirectly decreases human and economic losses caused by this phenomena and thus benefits the whole society also by increasing the productivity of agriculture in India. All citizens will benefit, if there will be enhanced awareness and subsequently emissions will be reduced.
