New ambassadorial appointments to Chile and Nigeria

On 16 May, the President of the Republic appointed the following new Ambassadors:

Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Mika-Markus Leinonen as Head of the Embassy of Finland in Santiago de Chile, Chile, from 1 January 2015.Leinonen will move to Santiago de Chile from Brussels, where he has held civilian crisis management positions since 2007 serving, for example, as Director responsible for Civilian Crisis Management at the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU. In Brussels, he has also served in the Permanent Representation of Finland to the EU, the Mission of Finland to NATO, and the Embassy of Finland. Leinonen worked also at the Embassy of Finland in Santiago de Chile in the early years of his career.

At the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Leinonen has held various positions at the Department of External Economic Relations and the Political Department.

Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury as Head of the Embassy of Finland in Abuja, Nigeria, from 1 September 2014.

At the moment, Suomela-Chowdhury, who joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs staff in 1997, is acting as Head of the Unit for UN Development Issues at the Ministry’s Department for Development Policy. At the Ministry, she has also worked at the Political Department, the Department for Global Affairs, and the Secretariat for Nordic Cooperation.

At Finnish missions abroad, Suomela-Chowdhury has served at the Finnish Embassies in Beijing and Santiago de Chile.
