Violation of data security in the Finnish Foreign Service
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirms that the Foreign Service of Finland has been the target of a serious data security violation. The matter has been investigated in cooperation with the Finnish Security Intelligence Service, which is responsible for the preliminary investigation.
Data breaches are a fairly common international phenomenon that also extends to Finland. At this stage it is impossible to verify whether government or private bodies are behind the violations.
Technical security has been improved continuously for several years and all observed deficiencies have been corrected. A great deal has been invested in the handling of classified information and in systems for this.
The data breach applies to the internet-based network, where open information and data of the lowest classification level are handled. The leak does not apply to data with a higher security classification – information classified as confidential and secret – or to internationally classified information.
Although no indications of international data leaks have been detected, the EU authorities were informed of the data breach once the problem had been analysed adequately.
