EU/Chivi Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project - CHIWASH
Description
The project will be implemented in the Chivi disctrict of Masvingo province in Zimbabwe. The main objective is to improve the health status of the beneficiaries as a result of decreased prevalence of diarrhoeal diseases through sustainable access to appropriate water and sanitation facilities, better understanding of the relation between water borne diseases and access to water and sanitation, and increased adherence to safe hygiene practices. Only 67 % of the population in Zimbabwe has access to appropriate water sources, and particularly in rural areas most people lack access to sanitation facilities. The project activities include construction of boreholes and rehabilitation of water points as well as the establishment, strengthening, and training of water point committees. The participation of communities in both planning and implementation of activities will be of particular focus. The proposed funding for the project is 165 125 euros, divided for four years in 2012-2015 as follows: 50 000 euros for each of the first three years and 15 125 euros for the fourth year of the project.
