The EU and the Middle East discussed at the meeting of Finland’s and Serbia’s foreign ministers

Talks during the meeting of the Finnish and Serbian foreign ministers touched upon Serbia’s possible accession to the European Union. Other topical issues raised were Syria and the situation in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić of Serbia met with Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja on 12 April. The two foreign ministers praised the good spirit of their meeting and were confident that cooperation would increase further in the future.

Foreign Minister Jeremić thanked Finland for the country’s support of EU enlargement and expressed the hope that Serbia’s accession negotiations can be started during this year. Jeremić also pointed out that, compared to neighbouring countries, the Serbian economy has a sound base.

The foreign ministers also discussed the situation in Syria. According to Foreign Minister Jeremić, Serbia also supports the proposal for resolving the strife in Syria presented by Kofi Annan and the Arab League.
