Foreign Minister Tuomioja to attend the Informal EU Foreign Ministers Meeting
Press release 221/2011
1 September 2011
Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will take part in the Informal EU Foreign Ministers Meeting in Gymnich format, held in Sopot, Poland on 2–3 September.
The topics on the agenda for Friday are the EU’s strategic partnerships, with the emphasis on preparations for the Summits with South Africa, Brazil and India. The meeting will then proceed to the Middle East peace process.
The Foreign Ministers will assess the EU’s further measures in stabilising Libya. Finland, as other EU countries, considers the National Transitional Council as the legitimate governing authority in Libya and, at this stage, as the sole representative of the state and people of Libya.
On Saturday the meeting will discuss the EU’s initiatives concerning the Southern and Eastern neighbourhoods. Ukraine, Belarus and Syria are also on the agenda. The candidate countries have been invited to attend this segment. Discussion of the Eastern Partnership will in part serve as a base for the Summit to be held in Warsaw in late September.
