Geopolitics of peacemaking and cultural diplomacy in Turkmenistan
Press release 143/2011
Geopolitics of peacemaking is the theme of the seminar organised by the Finnish Ambassador to Turkmenistan Tuula Yrjölä and the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, on Monday, 16 May.
The keynote speaker of the seminar, MP Pekka Haavisto, will speak to Turkmen foreign policy experts about peacemaking in geopolitically difficult circumstances and tell about his own experiences in peace mediation. In addition, Haavisto will meet UN representatives and diplomats operating in Turkmenistan.
Peacemaking and its geopolitical dimensions are a topical issue in a country the geographic location of which in the neighbourhood of, for example, Afghanistan, is challenging. For its part, Turkmenistan has endeavoured to solve the challenges related to its geographic position by means of a UN General Assembly resolution issued in 1996 on neutrality of the country.
Cultural diplomacy, on the other hand, is represented by the concert of soprano Riikka Hakola, in the Ashgabat Opera Theatre on Saturday, 14 May. Accompanied by pianist Ilkka Paananen, Ms. Hakola will perform songs by Sibelius and Merikanto, and Turkmen baritone Ismail Jumaev will join her to sing the gems of Italian opera music.
With these initiatives, Finland aims to increase dialogue and cooperation opportunities between the countries and encourage Turkmenistan to make social reforms.
