Minister Väyrynen to an export promotion trip to Peru, Argentina and Uruguay

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen will make an export promotion trip to Peru, Argentina and Uruguay on 6-11 March. The purpose of the visit is to increase and diversify the trade and economic relations between Finland and the three countries in question.
The main themes of Väyrynen’s visit include cooperation within forest, energy, extractive, service and innovation sectors. In Peru, the programme will also include a launch of two regional development cooperation programmes. The business delegation of more than 25 people accompanying the Minister will consist of representatives from the environmental, energy and forest sectors, meteorology, machine and shipyard industry, consulting and the financing sector. Finpro was in charge of assembling the business delegation.
In Peru, Minister Väyrynen will be hosted by Minister of Trade and Tourism Eduardo Ferreyros. Väyrynen will also meet Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Garcia Belaunde and Minister of the Environment Antonio Brack Egg. While in Peru, Väyrynen will participate in the opening ceremonies of forest sector and energy and environmental partnership programmes between Finland and four Andes region counties.
In Argentina, the objective of the visit is to extensively promote cooperation and business opportunities in various sectors, such as production of renewable energies, services, and metal and technology industries. During the visit, Minister Väyrynen will meet, among others, country’s Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and several other ministers. Minister Väyrynen’s visit is the first ministerial visit from Finland to Argentina since 2002.
In Uruguay, Minister Väyrynen will be hosted by Foreign Minister Luis Almagro The Minister is also scheduled to meet the President of the country José Mujica. In Uruguay, the focus will be on development of cooperation, for instance, in forest and energy sectors, metal and technology industry and financing services.
In 2010, Finland’s exports to Peru were approximately EUR 55 million and imports somewhat over EUR 260 million. The most important exports are paper and different types of equipment. More than 90 per cent of the imports consist of minerals, chiefly copper and zinc. Finnish exports to Argentina rose to approximately EUR 100 million last year, whereas the imports, consisting mostly of wine and fruits, remained at the level of slightly over EUR 20 million. The most important exports are forest industry products, machinery and equipment. Finnish exports to Uruguay in 2010 amounted to almost EUR 30 million, consisting mostly of paper and machinery. Imports from Uruguay amounted to almost EUR 14 million, including mostly meat products and chemicals. In recent years, Latin America’s share of Finland’s foreign trade has ranged from two to three per cent, showing a trade surplus for Finland.
