Finland supports the rehabilitation of the education sector in Haiti
Press release 360/2010
10 December 2010
Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen has granted 2.5 million euros to three projects supporting the rehabilitation of the education sector in Haiti.
Finland will finance a school building project by UNDP through which ten new schools will be erected in place of those destroyed in the earthquake. Five large school centres will be built in Léogâne in south-western Haiti and five smaller ones in the adjacent mountain area. This region was the epicentre of the earthquake that hit the Caribbean country in January.
UNDP’s school project will be executed by Finn Church Aid, who is already engaged in the education field in Haiti. The project will last for two years and Finland’s support to it in 2010 amounts to 1.4 million euros.
Finland further finances a 400 000 euro debris removal and environment project by UNDP in the same Léogâne area. The debris of the destroyed houses will be transported to specially designed collection sites for sorting and crushing. The recycled material can be used for paving and mending roads and public spaces as well as for the repair of river beds. The project will be carried out by local non-governmental organizations and authorities.
In addition Finland will invest 700 000 euros in the multilateral Haiti Reconstruction Fund. The Finnish contribution will be channelled as budget support towards the payment of teachers’ salaries.
Finland is going to allocate a total of 10 million euros to the reconstruction of Haiti under the period 2010-2012. Finland has separately provided 2.7 million euros towards the cancelling of Haiti’s debts to the International Development Agency (IDA) and the Inter-American Development Bank.
Finland has given 6.2 million euros in humanitarian assistance for Haiti; 5.4 million euros for emergency assistance and 0.8 million euros for cholera epidemic.
