Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis' first visit to Finland
Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis and Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb gave a news briefing at the Government Banquet Hall Smolna after a successful lunch meeting on 29 April.
Aside from bilateral relations between Finland and Lithuania, the Foreign Ministers discussed topical EU issues, such as the Eastern Partnership and Russia, as well as Ukraine. The Ministers also discussed energy issues, the Lithuanian Chairmanship of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) and the Baltic Sea regional cooperation. Close Baltic-Nordic relations were considered important also in the future.
Minister Stubb acknowledged the excellent bilateral relations of Finland and Lithuania. The Ministers were happy about healthy dialogue also on subjects such as nuclear safety and environmental issues. Foreign Minister Ažubalis assured their control systems and expertise on nuclear power will ensure also regional security.
Foreign Minister Ažubalis' agenda included a meeting with the President of the Republic Tarja Halonen. Foreign Minister Ažubalis felt the two countries agree on many issues and the meeting was a success. Furthermore, Foreign Minister Ažubalis thanked Finland for the opportunity to station a Lithuanian diplomat at the Finnish Embassy in Tanzania.
During his visit, Foreign Minister Ažubalis also met with MP Pertti Salolainen, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Finnish Parliament.
