New Ambassadors to Lisbon, New Delhi and Teheran

The President of the Republic appointed today, 27 March, the following Ambassadors:

Asko NumminenAppointment of Counsellor of Foreign Affairs Asko Numminen as Head of the Finnish Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal as from 1 September 2009.

Numminen will take up his duties leaving New Delhi where he has been serving as Ambassador since 2005. Numminen entered the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1975 and has served Finland's Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Finnish Embassy in London, as Consul General in Hong Kong and Ambassador in Brasilia. As for his career at the Ministry, he has served i.a. as Director General of the delegation for the economic relations with developing countries, headed the office of international environmental issues and served as the Finnish officer charge of the UN World Summit on the Information Society at the Department for Global Affairs.

Terhi HakalaAppointment of Counsellor of Foreign Affairs Terhi Hakala as Head of the Finnish Embassy in New Delhi, India as from 1 September 2009.

Hakala has been carrying out the duties of the Head of the mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to Georgia since 2007. Before joining the OSCE, she was serving as Finland's Finnish Roving Ambassador for Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaidzhan. Hakala, who had joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1988, has worked for Finnish missions, including the Finnish Embassy in Moscow, the Consulate General in St. Petersburg and Finland's Permanent Mission to the OSCE in Vienna. From 1995 to 1996, Hakala served on the chairmanship team of the OSCE Minsk Conference seeking a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. At the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, during 2001-2004, Hakala headed the Unit for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and performed various duties at the Political Department, the Department for External Economic Relations, the Department for Europe, and the Department for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Harri SalmiAppointment of Counsellor of Foreign Affairs Harri Salmi as Head of the Finnish Embassy in Teheran, Iran as from 1 September 2009.

Salmi has been serving as Director of the Unit for Northern Europe since 2008. He entered the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1978. As for his diplomatic career, he has served the Finnish Embassies in Bonn, Moscow, Budapest, and London, and he held the post of Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy in Oslo during the period 1998-2002. At the Ministry, Salmi has worked for the Press and Culture Department, the Department for Administrative Affairs, the Department for External Economic Relations, the Political Department and the Department for Europe where he headed the Unit for Western Europe from 2002 to 2008. In the years 1991-1993, Salmi held the position of Special Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Trade.
