Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen opened the Regional Energy and Environment Partnership Forum in Costa Rica on 2 April. The theme of the forum is productive utilisation of especially the wastes arising as byproducts of agriculture as a renewable energy source. The partnership programme between Finland and seven Central American states was started at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002. Austria and the Dominican Republic joined the partnership in 2007.
In his opening speech at the forum, Minister Väyrynen stressed the importance of development that is sustainable economically, socially and environmentally. In particular, energy efficiency and increased use of renewable energy are of great significance, for instance, in responding to climate change. Väyrynen expressed his appreciation for the concrete projects launched in Central America through the partnership approach; at present there are 137 such projects in progress. The partnership approach has also increased internal integration among the Central American countries as well as their cooperation in energy and environment related issues. The minister also noted that the partnership approach begun in Cental America serves as a good model for cooperation elsewhere. Similar efforts are under planning, for example, to be carried out in Asia.
Minister Väyrynen travelled to Costa Rica from Mexico, where he had been on an export promotion trip. The minister was accompanied by a business delegation with more than 30 representatives from companies especially in the energy, environment and technology sectors. In Mexico, Väyrynen met with five Cabinet members, including Foreign Secretary Espinosa and Economy Secretary Sojo. The minister’s trip continued on Wednesday, 2 April to Nicaragua, where the visit focuses on development cooperation affairs. Väyrynen meets, among others, with President Ortega and Foreign Minister Santos.
