Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Väyrynen to visit Mexico, Costa Rica and Nicaragua

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen will visit Mexico, Costa Rica and Nicaragua from 30 March to 4 April. Minister Väyrynen will be travelling in Mexico, to promote exports and internationalisation, from 31 March to 1 April. A broad-ranging business delegation of more than 30 people, including representatives of the information technology, health, mechanical engineering, mining, building, environment, and energy sectors and the defence industry will travel with the minister. The chairman of the business delegation will be Harri Kerminen, CEO of Kemira Group.
Väyrynen’s host will be Eduardo Sojo Garza-Aldape, Secretary of the Economy. Väyrynen will also meet Patricia Espinosa, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and other central ministers. A business seminar will also be held, organised in cooperation with Finpro and local bodies.
The purpose of the visit is to survey the business opportunities offered by Mexico, to present Finnish know-how to Mexican officials and companies, and to obtain current information about trends in the country’s business environment as well as to promote investments between the two countries.
From Mexico, Väyrynen will continue to Costa Rica, where he will participate in the opening of the Regional Forum organised under the Energy and Environment Partnership between Finland and Central America on 2 April. The theme of the forum is renewable energy from farming residues and solid wastes. Väyrynen will also meet Roberto Dobles, Costa Rican Minister of Environment and Energy, and Carlos Guerrero, Energy Minister of El Salvador, the country holding the Presidency of the Central American Integration System. He will also have a meeting with José Joaquin Campos, Director General of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE) in Costa Rica and will discuss cooperation potential, for instance, in the forest sector.
Minister Väyrynen’s trip to Central Americal will end on 2–4 April with a visit to Nicaragua, focusing on development cooperation. Väyrynen will meet Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Santos and Vice Minister Valdrak Jaentschke, responsible for development cooperation. In addition, he will meet the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and the Minister of Health and other central representatives of development cooperation sectors. Minister Väyrynen will also review development cooperation projects funded by Finland in the rural municipality of Teustepe.
